Step by step
How to add a countdown timer to a beehiiv post
Create the timer
Describe what's ending and Create with AI drafts the timer (Basic and up), or set it up in the editor: deadline, layout, colors and language. A transparent background (Basic and up) lets the timer sit on your newsletter's own colors. Choose Fixed for one date or Evergreen for a per-reader window.
Copy the beehiiv embed
Open Embed for the image URL and an HTML snippet. For an evergreen timer, pick beehiiv as the email platform there and the URL ends in ?vid={{email}}, beehiiv's merge tag for the subscriber's email address.
One click: insert into a draft post (Pro and up)
Connect beehiiv under Settings → Integrations with a beehiiv API key and your publication ID. Send to ESP in the timer editor lists your draft posts; pick one and the position, and flashtimer adds the timer to the post's content.
Or paste it into the beehiiv editor (every plan, including Free)
In the post, type / and choose Image, then Insert from URL and paste the timer URL; add your offer as the image link. On paid beehiiv plans you can instead type /, choose HTML Snippet and paste the snippet, then click Preview.
Check web and email, then send
Write the deadline in a sentence under the timer. Send a test email and open it in Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook. Then look at the web version too, because beehiiv publishes the same post to your site.
Why newsletters use a countdown timer
Newsletters have deadlines that aren't store sales: early-bird pricing on your paid tier, a live Q&A, a cohort or course that closes, a giveaway, a conference discount from a sponsor. A countdown turns "ends Friday" into a number that keeps shrinking, and because the image is rendered at open, it's still right for the reader who gets to your issue on Thursday night.
Keep it for real deadlines. Readers of a newsletter trust you, and a timer that quietly resets spends that trust. For a live session, the webinar countdown timer email page covers reminder timing; for a paid launch, see the product launch countdown email guide.
Email version vs web version of your post
beehiiv publishes one post as both an email and a web page. The flashtimer image loads in both, so a fixed timer shows the same correct countdown on your site and in the inbox.
Merge tags are different. beehiiv fills in {{email}} for the email send, but the web page has no subscriber to fill in. So for an evergreen timer, keep that block in the email version only, using beehiiv's visibility settings, and give web readers a fixed timer or a plain sentence instead. Test both before you publish.
Evergreen timers in beehiiv automations
beehiiv automations, such as a welcome series, reach each subscriber on a different day. A fixed date is wrong for almost all of them. An evergreen timer with ?vid={{email}} gives every new subscriber the same window, for example 7 days on a founding-member price, starting at their first open. beehiiv replaces the tag at send time, and flashtimer hashes the address before storing it.
This pairs well with a welcome email discount countdown for your paid tier. The evergreen countdown timer email page explains starts-on-open vs starts-on-send. Evergreen timers are on the Basic plan and up. If a weekly deadline repeats, such as submissions for next week's issue, a recurring countdown timer resets on its own.
Inbox support, after the deadline and branding
The timer shows in Gmail, Apple Mail, Yahoo, Outlook on the web, Mac and mobile, and any client that shows images. Classic Outlook for Windows (2007–2019, and newer versions with Windows animations turned off) shows only the first frame of an animated GIF, which is the correct time left at the open but doesn't tick, so keep the deadline in text. Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-fetches images. By default those loads get the live countdown as it stood then; on Pro and up, Apple Mail options can show them a message, your fallback image or nothing instead, so cached opens never show a stale time.
When the deadline passes, the timer shows your expiry message or, from Basic up, your own fallback image, such as "Early-bird pricing has ended". That matters for newsletters more than most, because your archive stays online and gets read for months. Match your publication's look with fonts, colors and layouts on the custom branded countdown timer page.
Troubleshooting a beehiiv countdown timer
Check these before anything else.
- The timer doesn't move: it was uploaded to beehiiv's media library as a file. Use Insert from URL or the HTML Snippet so it loads live.
- Every reader sees the same evergreen countdown: check that {{email}} in the URL is spelled exactly, and that you are looking at the email, not the web version.
- HTML Snippet isn't in the menu: it is listed under beehiiv's paid features. The Image block with Insert from URL works on every beehiiv plan.
- Send to ESP can't see your posts: check the publication ID and that the post is still a draft. If it still fails, your beehiiv plan may not include API access to posts; use the paste method.
