Shopify email countdown timer for your sales and discounts

A flashtimer Shopify email countdown timer is a live GIF that shows the real time left when each customer opens your email. Paste it into a Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) campaign on any flashtimer plan, or connect your store on Pro so every Shopify discount with an end date gets its own timer that stays in sync.

Step by step

How to add a countdown timer to a Shopify email

  1. Create the timer in flashtimer

Set the end date to match your sale, pick a layout and your brand colors, and write an expiry message. On Basic and up you can describe the sale in a sentence and let the AI countdown timer generator draft it. With your store connected on Pro, the timer is created from the discount for you.

  2. Copy the HTML snippet

Click Embed in the timer editor and choose Copy HTML. This works on every flashtimer plan, including Free. (One-click insertion into draft campaigns is for email platforms like Klaviyo and Mailchimp; Shopify Messaging takes the snippet by hand.)

  3. Add a Custom Liquid section in Shopify Messaging

In Shopify admin, open Marketing, create or edit an email campaign, and add a Custom Liquid section where the timer should go. Paste the snippet. Shopify only lets you create Custom Liquid sections from a desktop device, and a section can hold up to 50 KB, far more than the snippet needs.

  4. Link the timer and set alt text

Wrap the <img> tag in a link to the sale collection (<a href="…">…</a>) and change the alt text from "Countdown Timer" to the real deadline, like "Sale ends Sunday at midnight". Use a full https:// address for the link.

  5. Send a test, then schedule

Send a test to yourself and open it in Gmail and on your phone. The timer should show the time left right now. Then schedule the campaign as usual.

Why a live timer beats a countdown GIF uploaded to Shopify

Many Shopify guides tell you to upload a countdown GIF under Content → Files and insert it into an Image section. That GIF is a recording: it plays the same frames to everyone, whenever they open, and loops back to the start. A customer who opens on the last day still sees "3 days left".

A flashtimer timer is drawn at the moment of each open, so the time is always real. That's why it must stay at flashtimer's URL. If you upload it to Shopify's files, you lose the countdown. The Custom Liquid section keeps the original URL, which is why we recommend it for every flash sale countdown email or Black Friday campaign.

Shopify discount countdown timers that update themselves

Connect your Shopify store to flashtimer (Pro and up) and your discounts become timers. A discount with an end date gets its own countdown, ready to drop into any email. Change the end date in Shopify and the timer follows, because webhooks keep the deadline in sync. Delete the discount and the timer is archived. You can turn creating, updating and archiving on or off.

On Business and up, a timer can also end early when a product sells out, so you never count down to stock you no longer have. Connecting your store also gives you a starter timer for abandoned-cart emails, once Shopify approves the connection for protected customer data, which it requires before sending checkout events.

This is a store connection, not a Shopify App Store app: flashtimer isn't listed there. Everything is set up from flashtimer's own integrations page.

Per-customer countdowns: use Klaviyo or Omnisend with Shopify

A timer with one deadline suits a campaign. Abandoned checkout and welcome emails are different, because each customer starts at a different moment. An evergreen countdown timer gives every reader their own countdown from their first open, but it needs the email platform to put a per-recipient merge tag in the image URL.

flashtimer has those tags ready for the email platforms most Shopify stores use: {{ person.KlaviyoID }} for Klaviyo countdown timers and the contact email tag for Omnisend countdown timers. If you send flows from either platform, build per-customer timers there and keep Shopify Messaging for fixed-date campaigns. Our abandoned cart email countdown timer page covers the timing.

What customers see in Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook

The timer counts down in Gmail, Apple Mail, Yahoo, and Outlook on the web, Mac and mobile. Classic Outlook for Windows (2007–2019, and newer versions with Windows animations turned off) shows only the first frame of a GIF. With flashtimer, that frame is still the correct time left at the moment of opening; it just doesn't tick. Put the deadline in your text too.

Apple Mail Privacy Protection loads images in advance. By default those loads get the live countdown as it stood then; on Pro and up, Apple Mail options can show them a message, your fallback image or nothing instead, so cached opens never show a stale time. Gmail caches images through its proxy, so the timer is served with no-cache headers and a reopen shows the current time.

After the sale ends, and matching your store's brand

When the deadline passes, the timer shows your expiry message, or a fallback image of your own on Basic and up, such as your new arrivals. Customers who open the email late never see a countdown to a discount that's gone. With store sync, archiving the discount archives the timer too.

Use your store's colors and fonts: multiple layouts, a transparent background, uploaded custom fonts on paid plans and labels in several languages. Compare what each plan includes on pricing.
